I'm astonished of all these violent reactions to this article. I know there is some true things and things that should be thinking more.

1/ typeset. yes, it takes concentration when the typeset is special. However you get used to. In Wizard (the exemple you gave) everytime the hero "henshins" I do not look the subtitle anymore. It's just graphical and cool the first time you see it.

2/ About the word which are truly not translated : it could be a choice of the subber. It reminds me of a One Piece sub in which the subber did not want to translate the word Nakama. I think it might be a good idea, but only for a very few words and if it is really easy to remember so you do not have to thing again. Your example of Asameshimae is true (not easy to remember, long)

3/ though I could be ok in general, your example is not well found of mahoutsukai / Wizard. Wizard is just the name of the Kamen Rider, not his function. If it would be Kamen Rider Oliver or Kamen Rider Clinton, h would have been named Oliver or Clinton. The choice was to make the difference between the function / job (mage) and his name (Wizard).

However it's a good reflection. I would be honest : I'll continue to read TvNihon subtitles, just because it's the most centralized place to find subs and discuss with fans.

Sincerly

Just randomly came upon this on the internet. One of the worst inventions of the internet is a comment box. People are entitled to their opinion whether they like TVN or not. It appears some of the responses to the original poster do not understand what constructive criticism is. I think we can all agree to disagree.

"TV-Nihon is a thing of the past and should only be used until viable alternatives make themselves known."

If there are no viable alternatives, then it isn't really a thing of the past, is it? Offering editorial bias as fact in an opinion piece is all well and good, but ideally you should avoid contradicting yourself in the space of one sentence.

The rest of your rant seems to be little more than bias, entitlement and misunderstanding to the point I wonder if your comments about softsubs aren't just trolling or you really don't understand why a fansub group known to the content originators they rely upon (and who still make lucrative profit from DVD and Blu-ray sales) wouldn't want to make raw HD video with optional subtitles available to anyone with an internet connection.

Having said all that, I do find TVN a little prickly and defensive in how they deal with their fandom, though I'll grant you the sense of entitlement of the average fansub viewer when they don't get what they want when they want - for free - would try anyone's patience. I'm amazed they didn't just quit years ago, though as a KR fan am thankful they didn't. As someone who doesn't want to spend his time trawling the web for the latest episodes of Japanese shows fansubbed by the latest hobbyist to think they know how these things are "meant" to be done and will likely give up very soon after they find out how much work is involved and/or receive their first speck of criticism from some other weeabo fanboy with a differing opinion, something as high profile, easy to find and reliable as TVN is a gift.

Couldn't agree with you more! When I first watched Samurai I felt that something was missing. The actors were very 2d, non emotional, and didn't give to much into the action. I could see a lot of MMPR fundamentals in the show but I later realized it was mixed with a horrible dubbing almost of Shinkenger's script and story. Saban also pulled a lot of essentials that were needed in the story to have it make sense. Saban totally was lackadaisical about this season and maybe wrecked his own chances of Nick getting fully behind the PR series as well. It was basically him just saying "Power Rangers is back!" and just selling a bunch of merchandise. I have a feeling Megaforce will be better and hopefully Saban will earn Nickelodeon's investment back. Otherwise there's always Cartoon Network in 2014.

I don't know dude, Power Rangers is silly no matter how much you stroke it, I don't blame them for laughing. This whole thing seems like you're trying to validate your love for Power Rangers with the whole RPM "is dark and mature and not like the Power Rangers you remember" that every RPM fanboy uses
